CROOKED FINGER — Just as they have done for 59 years, members of the Holy Rosary Mission are preparing for their 60th annual pilgrimage in honor of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. This year’s pilgrimage will start at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 15, with the recitation of the rosary, followed by an outdoor Mass. Celebrant will be Benedictine Father Philip Waibel.

Pope Pius XII declared 1954 a “Marian year.” Holy Rosary Church’s administrator at the time, Benedictine Father Hildebrand Melchior, organized the first pilgrimage in response to the declaration.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to try out the mission’s new front deck and steps, built by Joe Bielenberg and his family, in memory of Bielenberg’s father. Refreshments will be available in the church basement following Mass.

Holy Rosary is located in the Cascade foothills, five miles southeast of Scotts Mills. The church is on Ettlin Loop Road. For information or directions, contact Margaret Gersch at 503-873-6596, Pat Schonbachler at 503-873-6405, or Father Waibel, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Mount Angel at 503-845-2296.
