PORT ORFORD — Volunteers at St. John Church will provide free rides to church on Sunday mornings and then back home after the service.
Anyone who lives in the area and is unable to travel to church on his or her own is eligible for the service. Catholics and non-Catholics alike are welcome at Mass and the social gathering afterward.
Sunday services start at 8:30 a.m. and the social time is typically over by 10 a.m.
“This new outreach program was inspired by our recently elected Pope Francis, who encourages everyone to reach out to the needy, sick, elderly and handicapped individuals in their community,” said Sherry Johnson, outreach chairwoman at the parish. Johnson has been visiting nursing homes and assisted living centers in the town of 1,200 to make people aware of the parish’s new service.
“I have offered rides to a couple people in the community who occasionally attend, but have no regular transportation to church,” Johnson said. “My husband and I just have to leave for church about 15 minutes earlier than usual, which isn’t that big of a sacrifice.”
