Photo, newspaper garner awards
A digital photograph of two jellyfish taken last summer at the Oregon Coast Aquarium earned St. Mary’s Academy sophomore Mary Root the Congressional Art Award for Oregon’s 1st District. Root will be recognized along with other 2013 contest winners from the country’s 435 congressional districts in a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on June 26. Her winning photograph, titled “Love Is Electrifying,” will be on display in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building for a year.
Root, a 15-year-old Tigard resident, was drawn to the contrast between the orange jellyfish and the bright blue water in the aquarium tank.
Meanwhile, St. Mary’s Academy’s student newspaper, The Ms. Print, recently received a first-place award from the American Scholastic Press Association for its November 2012 issue. Grace McManus, a senior, received an outstanding story award for a guest contribution titled “Jihad Advertising Controversy.”
The Ms. Print staff roster last fall comprised Clarice Beasley, Maddy Cane, Ursula Clausing-Hufford, Sophie Conlon, Olivia Hinerfeld, Sophie Kurschner, Maddison Mackin, Maddi Nelson and Lee Rost.
