Six St. Mary’s Academy seniors presented research papers at the 23rd annual Young Historians Conference at Portland State University on May 2, and one, Lydia Bales, was selected as the winner.
The students take St. Mary’s Academy’s Honors Modern European History class, part of the PSU Challenge Program where students earn college credit for successfully completing the course. Portland area high-schoolers submitted research papers to a jury of PSU doctoral history students. Twenty-six papers were selected for presentation. Bales' work on the Danish resistance during World War II took top prize.
The topic resonated with Bales as an example of “the power of the human spirit and how, if people work together, you can accomplish the impossible.”
