The University of Portland will host a conference, “The Impact of Catholic Education in America: Past, Present, and Future,” Thursday through Saturday, June 20-22. The conference will highlight the history of Catholic education in America and examine what has allowed Catholic schools to flourish across the nation.

Keynote speaker is Thomas Groome from the Department of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Boston College. Groome’s books include What Makes Us Catholic, begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20 in Buckley Center Auditorium on campus. Workshops continue the next two days.

With a tradition of educating all who wish to enroll — rich and poor, Catholic and non-Catholic — the Catholic education system has had an impact on learners from pre-kindergarten to post-doctorate. Organizers argue the system has transformed American society and culture in creative and meaningful ways.

Cost is $200 for those registering between May 1 and June 20. There is a $100 registration fee for local archdiocesan teachers who wish to attend just the Friday sessions. Campus housing is available for $45 per night, single occupancy. Register at http://tinyurl.com/ln9gk9u or contact Jamie Powell at 503.943.7702 or [email protected]
