St. Ignatius Parish marked the retirement of Jesuit Father Thomas Royce with a Mass and potluck April 5.
Father Royce has served at the parish since 2005. Parishioners wore baseball hats in honor of the priest who loves the Seattle Mariners, as well as T-shirts that said: “I [heart symbol] Tom.” Father Royce’s shirt said, “I am Tom.”
Father Royce was ordained in 1956 and took his final vows in 1961 at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane, Wash. He taught for many years at Gonzaga University, but served at the Jesuit Provincial Office and Residence from 1980-‘86, and served at St. Luke Church in Woodburn from 1992-‘95.
Community members shared an Irish blessing for the retiring priest, and Father Royce offered words of gratitude for his years at St. Ignatius.
“We will miss him dearly,” said Patty Frangipani, office manager at St. Ignatius.
