Downtown parish says hello and goodbye
Holy Cross Father Ron Raab will celebrate his final Mass at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, at St. André Bessette Church. After serving in Portland since 2002, the priest will transfer to a parish in Colorado Springs, Colo. Breakfast will be served after Mass.
In August, the parish welcomes its 2013-14 St. Andre Fellows, Becca Chavez and Noelle Niedo.
The one-year post-graduate position allows young adults to explore their faith within a community experiencing urban poverty issues.
Chavez, originally from Santa Clara, Calif., graduated recently with a degree in social work and Spanish from the University of Portland. She worked for a year as an intern for Catholic Charities’ Pregnancy Support and Adoption Services Program.
Chavez’ new role at St. Andre is as the evening hospitality coordinator, coordinating the program on Thursday and Friday nights.
Niedo is originally from American Samoa, and also recently graduated from University of Portland, where she studied biology.
Niedo will coordinate the parish’s Saturday Immersions program, a day retreat for local university and high school students interested in exploring the connection between faith and service, learning about urban poverty issues, and experiencing the ministry of presence and hospitality.
Both women’s responsibilities will include staffing the parish’s morning hospitality program, working special events, supervising volunteers, and advocating for community members.
