Grant will help renovate Marylhurst chapel
The E. L. Wiegand Foundation of Reno, Nevada, has awarded Marylhurst University a grant of more than $240,000 to help fund the renovation and restoration of the E. L. Wiegand Hall Chapel. The chapel is located in Marylhurst’s administration building, and was named after the foundation in 1989 to recognize its first grant to the university.
In addition to the chapel, the Wiegand Foundation also has funded a partial building renovation, a teaching and learning center, and a physics and earth sciences laboratory.
Judith Johansen, president of Marylhurst, calls the chapel "the most beautiful and significant interior space on our campus.”
Work on the chapel will begin in June and be performed by Schommer & Sons, a Portland-based firm that has a long association with Marylhurst. The renovation and restoration project includes creation of a private worship space, or oratory, in the vestibule, and complete refurbishment of the nave.
