MILWAUKIE — Some eighth graders say they can’t wait to move on to high school.  It's a true rite of passage.

But eighth graders at Christ the King School here talked about what they would miss about grade school. Wearing a uniform did not make the list.

Emmerson Smith, who has attended all nine years at Christ the King, was introspective, as she described moving on as similar to leaving family.

“In kindergarten, we were welcomed with open and loving arms," Smith says.

"Throughout my years at CTK I have been supported, cared about and it has felt like I had a second family."  Smith will join her older brother at La Salle Prep in the fall.

Family is a common theme. Another long timer, Christian Reyes, calls Christ the King “like my second home." Christian's father, Flaviano, is an alumnus. Seeing his oldest child transition to high school brings back memories of his graduation.

“We had a pretty tight knit class back then," the elder Reyes says. "Many of my classmates are still my good friends today, and now our children are attending our alma mater. We joke that we’ll be here for Grandparents Day!”

However, there is also a sense of relief, as the younger Reyes puts it, “to experience another chapter in my life.”  He says he’ll miss the teachers and staff who “have shaped me into the student I am today. I will also miss my classmates of whom I’ve shared many one-of-a-kind memories. This school will always have a special place in my heart.”

School officials are letting eighth graders know that the extended family is always ready to welcome them back.
