UP cited for acting on environmental concern

University of Portland is one of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the United States and Canada, according to The Princeton Review. UP was selected for inclusion in the Review’s Guide to 322 Green Colleges.

University of Portland was ranked the top college in the Portland area with an overall Green Rating of 91, ahead of Portland State (86), Linfield (84), Reed (79), Pacific (74), and Lewis & Clark (73).

Nationwide, 21 schools received a score of 99.

University of Portland is one of the only schools in the country with a LEED Platinum certified building and was the first college in the West to ban the sale of disposable plastic water bottles, helping start a national trend.

On May 9 UP is co-sponsoring two events with Maitripa College as part of the Environmental Summit, three days of teachings and conversations with the Dalai Lama and leaders of the Pacific Northwest environmental, scientific, policy and faith communities. At 9:30 a.m., the Dalai Lama will be joined in the University’s Chiles Center by religious leaders in an interfaith dialogue on “Spirituality and the Environment.” Later, at 1:30 p.m., also in the Chiles Center, the Dalai Lama will offer a public address entitled “Universal Responsibility and the Inner Environment: the Nature of Mind.”
