St. Mary's Academy raised more than $7,500 for Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Janus Youth Programs and Children's Heart Foundation of Oregon.
Doernbecher Week ran Feb. 11-15 and exceeded last year's fundraising efforts by approximately $2,300. The money will be divided equally among the three charities. Students sold T-shirts in class colors and participated in lunchtime activities like student-teacher dodgeball games and a lip-synching competition dubbed "Doernbecher Idol."
St. Mary's increased student engagement by implementing a new video competition this year. Students submitted commercials for Doernbecher Week to the fundraiser's Facebook page, with the goal of increasing web traffic and event awareness. The video with the most "likes" at the end of the week won.
"This year's Doernbecher Week had a lot of energy, and the students really seemed to enjoy the fun and friendly class competitions, but they always kept the charities in the forefront of their minds," says Sarah Rice, the student activities director. "I believe that commitment to helping these organizations is why we raised so much money this year."
