Vatican II liturgy teaching to be assessed
|Holy Cross Father Richard Rutherford|
Holy Cross Father Richard Rutherford, a University of Portland theology professor, will present “The Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy—A Call to Holiness Then and Now” as part of the Theology Thursdays Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in Buckley Center room 163 on the UP campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd.
Father Rutherford will argue that from the time of Pope Pius X there has been a natural progression, through the liturgical reforms of Pope Pius XII to Pope John XXIII, that laid the foundation for the belief of bishops at the Second Vatican Council that participation in the liturgy by all the baptized faithful, priests and lay persons alike, is the key to a genuine spiritual renewal of the church. By comparing specific reforms decreed by the Constitution 50 years ago with the liturgical life Catholics take for granted today, the priest will highlight the fruits of dedicated pastoral liturgical ministry throughout the decades.
The context for the talk will be the century-long history that culminated in the Constitution's promulgation.
