LAKE OSWEGO — Happy birthday, Mel Munch! The Our Lady of the Lake Church patriarch turned 100 on Jan. 17 and his parish community surprised him with a party the following weekend.
Munch, a tenor, has been in the church choir since 1998. He also sings in a four-part community choir, and when he’s not singing, he’s whistling, friends say.
Munch used to be a violinist, and when he retired from playing, he donated his violin to the Our Lady of the Lake School music department.
Among Munch’s favorite pastimes is baking. Usually, he turns up to choir gatherings with homemade cookies or cakes.
Munch attended Sacred Heart Elementary School in Milwaukie and Clinton Kelly, before graduating from Franklin High School. He graduated from Oregon State University and started working as a junior chemist.
He served as a staff officer with the 14th Armored Division; 125th Armored Engineer Battalion during World War II.
Munch’s wife Lolita died in the late 1990s. They had five children, and today the family has expanded to include a dozen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
