ROY — St. Francis of Assisi School celebrated 100 years of Catholic education last fall.  As part of the ceremony, a 25-year-old time capsule, which marked the school’s 75th anniversary, was unearthed by the students who buried it — now adults. The present day student council then buried a new time capsule containing current items.

At the reception following Mass, Father Scott Vandehey, a St. Francis of Assisi School graduate, received the NCEA Distinguished Graduate Award. He and other classmates shared a couple of stories about the early days of the school.

Today, St. Francis of Assisi School continues the traditions of daily prayer, attending weekly Mass, and helping out with various parish and school functions. During Advent the students in fifth and sixth grade sold ‘Santa-grams’ to raise money for a medical center in Uganda. This year, the entire student body also had a coin drive for Doernbecher Hospital. First and second graders were able to collect a total of $170.  During Advent, students also gathered non-perishable items for the local food bank and for St. Vincent de Paul. Students and parishioners donated a total of 350 pounds of canned goods.

Catholic Schools Week will begin for St. Francis School with a 10:30 am Mass on Jan. 27.  Cinnamon rolls will be served after Mass in the school with an open house from noon to 3 p.m. The student council and staff are busy planning the week, which will include celebrating with a variety of activities honoring their community — parents, grandparents, students, staff and volunteers.
