Today’s education goes beyond the traditional studies of reading, writing and arithmetic at Archbishop Howard School in Northeast Portland. Students frequently enhance their education by making contributions to the community.

At Archbishop Howard, students work individually, in class, with local parishes, and in the greater community doing service work. Throughout the school year, pre-kindergarteners through eighth graders participate in donating lunches to the St. Francis Dining Hall. Younger students collect pop tabs for the Ronald MacDonald House and donations for Unicef. Second graders make bi-monthly visits to a local retirement and care center. Third graders volunteer at the Providence Child Center.  Students also work serving food at Loaves and Fishes.

Middle School grades have the opportunity to enhance their service work outside of school by volunteering as altar servers at their parish churches and regularly assist St. Rose parishioners with St. Vincent de Paul deliveries.

Last November, students collected three large barrels of food donations for St. Vincent de Paul through a “Mac 'n Cheese and Tuna Please” Fund Drive, lead by the third grade class. The graduating class of 2012 performed more than 1,000 hours of service during their eighth grade year. The staff of Archbishop Howard also participates in a service project. During Advent staff collected and sorted donations at Transition Project, a local homeless shelter.
