Children in all grades love him, and they have grown in music appreciation since his arrival a few years back. He also is the leader of a Jazz Band, which plays every Sunday night in the Pearl District at a restaurant called “Ivories." He also plays Fridays at the Portland City Grill, on the 30th floor of the U.S. Bancorp Building.
Pappelis says he grew up with fun music, one time playing with the Dixieland Players in St. Louis. On Feb. 9 at the Elks Lodge in McMinnville, he plays a benefit concert for the school with some renowned Dixieland players. The Knights of Columbus are providing chefs to help with the dinner.
“St. James School is thriving," says Jeananne Bloudek, the principal. The school presently has 105 students, and projections show an enrollment of 120 by next year. More options for the 4-year old preschool program are coming for next school year. St. James holds an open house Thursday, Jan. 31.
