Each year the National Catholic Education Association Department of Boards and Councils of Catholic Education recognizes a few Catholic education boards, councils and commissions. Blanchet Catholic School’s board of directors was selected as a recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Board Award. An award ceremony will take place in Houston in April.
Blanchet operates with a 14-member board of directors. Three board members are part of the original group that petitioned the Archdiocese of Portland in 1995 to open the school in a city where two previous Catholic high schools had closed.
The board’s accomplishments include:
• Reaching out to alumni from previous Salem Catholic high schools to assist them in reuniting with each other and developing interest in Blanchet;
•Guiding the school through the process of growing from a school with 110 students in grades 7-9 into a highly regarded college preparatory school offering education to youth in grades 6-12 and a facility capable of serving 400 students;
• Developing balanced budgets while purchasing the school campus and guiding the school through major remodeling and construction projects.
