BEAVERTON — St. Cecilia Middle School students were inspired to be spiritual leaders and messengers with two outreach projects during December.

As a tribute to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, St. Cecilia Middle School students quietly decorated Christmas trees on the school’s campus. The students were encouraged to create ornaments from materials that could withstand the elements of nature. Appropriate to the season and circumstances, many of the ornaments were shaped as hearts, crosses, stars, and snowflakes. Inspirational words were written on the ornaments — “faith, hope and love” were the most prominent messages expressed.  The word “hope”, cut-out from cardboard, covered with foil, and tied with a bright red ribbon, was engraved with the following messages:

•    Hope is inside us all.
•    Be joyful in hope; have faith in prayer.
•    Hope is larger than our imagination; its purpose extends far beyond our comprehension.
•    Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.
The decorated Christmas trees provided a beautiful, visual portrayal of community - reflective, yet protecting the innocence of our young children.
“Cookies, Cupcakes & Charities” was the idea of St. Cecilia Middle School sisters, Maria and Sara Parker, to raise funds in memory of their classmate, Alena Marek, who passed away on Christmas Day, 2011. Middle School bakers also included Gabby Agnesse; Grace Calabrese; Cassie Dolan; Stacy Escobar; Glenna Fulitano; Kelly Gentry; Maddie Quinonez; KimberleySanders; Sara Sanders; and Emma Schuhmann. Support generated proceeds of more than $1,500 to be sent to CureSearch, a national childhood cancer foundation.
