School hosts politicians
Central Catholic High School in Portland welcomed elected officials and political organizations for the school's second annual Democracy in Action day last month.
This year’s guests included Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown, Portland City Commissioner Steve Novick, and Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton. The event also features representatives from Oregon congressional offices.
The goal is to get students to focus on what it means to be an active citizen and a critical consumer of information.
"We think the best way to do that is to have our students talk to the people in our government directly and offer them a chance to get involved through voter registration," says Mike Bodine, a school spokesman.
All 196 Central Catholic seniors taking government and politics and AP U.S. government classes were on hand to ask questions.
