UP gets $100,000 gift

The University of Portland has received $100,000 from the family of George and Virginia Schneider, grandparents of a current nursing student. Half of the gift has been added to the Molly Hightower Scholarship, named for a graduate who died in the 2010 Haiti earthquake while caring for special needs orphans. The other half establishes the Schneider Family Endowed Nursing Scholarship, designed to help deserving nursing majors who demonstrate financial need.

The Schneiders cited appreciation for the values-based education students receive at UP. All 11 of their children attended Catholic grade and high schools. A daughter, Ginger Corrada, graduated from the university in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Their granddaughter, Emily Corrada, is currently a senior nursing student.
The Schneider family was the principal owner of LaCrosse Footwear, until its sale last summer. Virginia Schneider, whose grandfather founded LaCrosse in 1897, currently lives in Lake Oswego. The late George Schneider is a former LaCrosse Footwear board chairman.

The Schneiders’ gift is part of the University’s RISE Campaign, which seeks to raise $175 million over the next several years. The RISE Campaign, which has raised more than $140 million to date, is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.
