KEIZER — The Thanksgiving meal ministry at St. Edward Church reaches out to those in need in the Salem/Keizer community. On Thanksgiving Day in 2011, volunteers delivered more than 1,300 hot meals to the hungry. This year they served 1448 people.
“It's a huge undertaking,” said Debi Welter, before the event. “This year we will cook over 1,000 pounds of turkey, make broth, 40 gallons of gravy, and 400 pounds of stuffing, all done from scratch.”
Volunteers took phones requests for meals, and on Thanksgiving day they came together to heat, package, and deliver the meals.
“There are many shut-ins and elderly people who would otherwise not have a hot Thanksgiving meal if it was not for the efforts of our volunteers and our parish,” Welter said.
