CORVALLIS — The first time St. Mary Parish’s Catholic Daughters provided a funeral luncheon was in 1967, after a service for 8-year-old Katya Ann Miskowiec. Since then, the women have offered their services to prepare light meals during funeral receptions at the church here.
Beth Schaefers and Mary Iwaniec are the chairwomen of the Catholic Daughters’ funeral committee. There are times when services at the church are few, and other weeks when they must organize as many as three receptions.
Schaefers has been a member of the parish since 1960. After she retired four years ago, she joined the group.
“I thought it would be a good place for me to give some of my time,” she said.
Volunteer Harriet Paradis makes sure there are enough volunteers to provide salads, cookies and desserts.
