Joan Benoit Samuelson
As the nation celebrates the 40th anniversary of Title IX, which provided more sports opportunities for women, St. Mary's Academy welcomes Olympian Joan Benoit Samuelson as keynote speaker at the school's 19th Annual Food for Thought Tuition Assistance Luncheon. The event is set for Nov. 30 at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower.
Samuelson won the first-ever women's Olympic marathon in 1984. In 2009, she was inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame. Author of a training guide, she consults for Nike.
St. Mary's Academy senior Ellen Patterson also will speak. Also a runner, she overcame major health obstacles, coming back stronger than ever to help St. Mary's win its first-ever OSAA 6A State Track and Field Championship last spring.
