Art teacher receives Marylhurst University award
St. Mary’s Academy art teacher and alumna Kathy Mitchell was honored with the Service to Society Award from Marylhurst University last month.
Mitchell graduated from St. Mary’s in 1964 and is in her 23rd year of teaching at the school. Previously, she was named 2011 Oregon Art Educator of the Year by the Oregon Art Education Association.
The latest recognition is much-deserved, said Holy Names Sister Linda Patrick, St. Mary’s Academy assistant principal for student life and alumna.
“Kathy’s dedication to teaching and the quality of the time she gives to each of her students, her peers and to the broader community are only some of the ways Kathy contributes to society," Sister Linda said, introducing Mitchell at the banquet. "She brings the transformative power of art created by human hands, minds and hearts to a world in need. Kathy is indeed a gift to society.”
Mitchell believes that an important part of her task as an educator is teaching students to appreciate the beauty and poetry of the world surrounding them.
“Getting teenagers to stop, be still and look is a challenge, especially with all the electronic distractions now, but I believe that it is a path to the spiritual life," she says. "Being a conduit for that process is an honor and a privilege.”
