Golf tournament raises funds for athletics
STAYTON — In August, Regis hosted the 27th annual Ram Open Golf Tournament at the Santiam Golf Course in Aumsville.

The Regis Athletic Association started coordinating the event last year, so the funds go toward Regis athletics.

“What Regis hangs their hat on is the fact that we don’t require kids to have to pay to play sports," says Tim Sherman, president of the Regis Athletic Association.

STAYTON — Three years ago this fall, Joni Gilles joined Regis High School in what was to be an interim administrative position. She has gladly remained with the school, seeing it through significant milestones and marked progress.

Regis has experienced an increase in enrollment over that period. During the 2009-’10 school year, there were 106 students. In 2010-'11, there were 132 and in 2011-’12 there were 141. This year, enrollment is at 152.

“We are continuing to grow,” Gilles says.

Last spring, Regis received national recognition for excellence in global education. The school will continue its investment in welcoming exchange students, welcoming eight this year to move total enrollment to 160.

With increased enrollment comes the continued need for tuition assistance. This year Regis will help almost half of the student population.

“Our main mission has been all about building on excellence," Gilles says, reflecting on increases in the past three years. "The biggest thing we’ve worked on is our accreditation process, an in-depth study of all the elements that make up a school to ensure that everything we are doing is of the highest quality. Our efforts continue to be to make certain that every student is college or career ready."

About 95 percent of Regis graduates pursue post-secondary education.

This year, Regis welcomes two new teachers. Eddie Caudel has come from New Zealand to teach religion. April Joy-Koer comes from Mount Hood Community College to teach math and science.

Gilles calls the Regis work environment "incredibly collaborative." The faculty are now reading the book "teach like a champion."

Regis begins the school year with a nearly completed track re-surfacing project. In the past three years, an effort to improve facilities has resulted in an updated library, revamped locker rooms, remodeled front office and tile in the classrooms.

“The past three years have been incredible,” says Gilles. “All I see this year is that continued upward trend.”
