De La Salle North: Fostering 'gentleness and zeal'

De La Salle North Catholic High School has continued its growth. The student body has exceeded 330, and Principal Tim Joy is keeping faculty and staff focused on dual themes of gentleness and zeal.

Gentleness and zeal were qualities included in the annual retreats that St. John Baptist de La Salle held with his earliest teachers in the 17th century. “To this day, De La Salle calls us to ‘touch the hearts of our students,’”Joy says. “Our teachers do this every day, coupling rigor with support; and our students respond to them with great effort.”

The school's mission is to provide a college-prep education and instill the values, faith, and skills that lead to academic achievement and lifelong success. Students work in local offices a day per week to offset tuition.

New staff have joined the North Portland school. Angela Balcacer will teach senior AP English and sophomore English. She most recently taught a leadership and entrepreneurship charter school in Portland.

Leslie Chester is new Title I teacher. Her last appointment was at Rosemary Anderson High School. Erandini Diaz, a part-time college student, is new morning receptionist.

Daniel and Sarah Maher have crossed the United States to be directors of the new Lasallian Volunteer House in Portland. Sarah will be serving at De La Salle as the Lasallian Youth Ministry director and teaching religious studies. Daniel will teach personal finance and develop supports for special needs students.

Brian Mayer, who hails from Los Angeles, will be teaching Algebra 2 and AP Calculus.

Leah Robinson graduated from the University of Michigan. She will be teaching U.S. and world history courses. Shannon Sonn most recently taught at Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City.  She will be teaching Spanish and coaching athletics. Jessie Zumbiel is a masters of social work student at Portland State University. She will intern in the counseling department.

The new Lasallian Volunteer Community opens after the departure of the De La Salle Christian Brothers from Portland. The house consists of four Lasallian volunteers led by the Mahers.

Volunteer Kacey Gavin will be assisting in the Corporate Internship Program. She is a graduate of St. Mary's University of Minnesota. Maddie Kettner graduated from St. Mary's University of Minnesota and will work with the Lasallian Youth Ministry. Mairead McNameeKing is a graduate of Boston College who will be assisting in the Corporate Internship Program.
