UP Wind Symphony and Orchestra concert to be held

 The University of Portland Wind Symphony and Orchestra will perform Saturday, Oct. 6 on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. The concert, set for Buckley Center Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature :performances by Nicole Leupp Hanig, the new assistant professor of music and head of vocal studies, in her debut University performance. She will sing Ravel's stirring Sheherazade song cycle, based on poetry by Tristan Klingsor.

The concert will also feature UP's double bass instructor and Oregon Symphony bassist, Jason Schooler, performing Bottesini's Concerto in B Minor for Double Bass and Orchestra. The Wind Symphony features new works for band by female composers, including the world premiere of Julie Giroux’s West Wind Overture and the American premiere of Rika Ishige’s Claps Gold. The performance will conclude with Paul Hindemith’s groundbreaking Symphony in B-flat, dedicated to the late UP music professor Roger O. Doyle.
