Mona makes life more fun for Portland priest.

Though he lives as a celibate, St. Michael the Archangel Church’s pastor, Father Jim Mayo, always arrives home to a warm welcome.

The warm greetings come from his two Cairn terriers, Sophie and Mack, an orange tabby cat, Sam, and a 32-year-old Moluccan cockatoo, Mona.

“I've had dogs and cats all my life and cannot imagine not having pets,” Father Mayo said.

The priest has had the cockatoo since 1988, when she was 8. The bird knows 20 words and phrases, including one naughty word she picked up once when Father Mayo was angry.

Cockatoos have been known to live for 112 years.

“She’ll outlive me,” Father Mayo said.
