TIGARD — St. Anthony School and Church broke ground at the site of a new proposed community center on Aug. 18. More than 500 people attended the event.
The event started with multi-cultural Mass at 5 p.m., followed by the ceremony. A picnic, games and entertainment followed.
Those who dug in with the ceremonial gold shovels were: Father Leslie Sieg, pastor; Steve Miller, chairman of the Building Committee; Loi Bui; Father Paul Materu, vicar; Karen Bolliger, St. Anthony School principal; and Kevin Shelby and John Cook Sr., campaign co-chairmen.
The community center is a $4.5 million project that will feature a commercial kitchen, dining area, assembly hall for plays and concerts, gathering space, meeting rooms and a nursery.
The community center is the second phase of the parish and school master plan. An updated middle school and new gymnasium were completed in 2002. Construction is set to begin in March 2013.
