9/2/2012 11:30:00 AM Marycrest alumnae choir performs again
The Allegras with their former Marycrest teachers.
The Allegras, a collection of Marycrest Academy graduates from the classes of 1969 through 1973, will perform at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23, at St. Anthony Church. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
The women reunited in 2009 to sing together for the first time in nearly four decades. They have continued to perform together. This show will be a collection of show tunes and old favorites.
Earlier this summer, the women flew from Portland to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose Motherhouse to visit the women who shaped their love of music as students at Marycrest. Dominicans ran Marycrest from 1956 until ‘73, the year the school closed. In San Jose, they performed for the women Religious. Several sisters jumped up and danced in the aisles as the Allegras sang.
"We wanted our performance to be casual and personal, but when we walked into the dining room to sing, the applause and standing ovation made me feel like a rock star,” said Diane Costanzo, class of 1972.
"We've never had such an exuberant audience,” said Peggy Donohue, class of 1971. “I couldn't believe so many nuns were up and dancing and singing along with us.”
St. Anthony is at 3720 SE 79th Ave. Admission to the concert is free.
