The class of 2012 from The Madeleine School in Northeast Portland will celebrate a graduation Mass at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 12 in St. Mary Magdelene Church.
As a requirement for graduation, each eighth grader will complete a capstone service project designed to help students respond to God’s call to serve others, commit to justice and service, and learn respect for the dignity of all people.
For the project, each student selected a social issue to investigate and research. After building a stronger understanding of their chosen issue, the students partnered with an organization or agency to coordinate 10 hours of volunteer work. Some of these organizations include Children’s Healing Art Project, Oregon Food Bank, Blanchet House, St. Francis Dining Hall, SOLV, Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Abby’s Closet, and Northwest Animal Companions of Oregon.
After completing the volunteer work, each student will write a reflective essay on how he or she grew from the experience, how the service connects to Catholic social teaching, and how he or she met the school’s spiritual, academic, moral, social, and physical learning expectations through the project. Students will present their service capstone and reflections to their classmates.
Students who received a 4.0 grade point average through middle school are Bailey Puetz, Sean Gillen, Raleigh Slyman, Robert Marksthaler, Erin Santos and Isabelle Turner.
