La Salle Prep takes the plunge for Special Olympics
MILWAUKIE — Thirty-three La Salle Prep students, teachers and family members ran into the frigid Columbia River in February to raise $4,434 for Special Olympics Oregon.

“I am very proud of the La Salle community with the way they embraced the challenge to increase awareness about being accepting of those who have disabilities through how we act and what we say” said Stephanie Blumenson, La Salle’s director of service.

The team wore red-feathered masks, red body paint, and shirts that read “Put a Bird on It” in honor of the La Salle Falcon mascot.

At the end of the day, the team left wet and cold; but with two awards. La Salle earned the trophy for second place for the amount of money raised in the K-12 school division and the first place trophy for the most participants in a school group.

Sophomore Joslynn Bigelow raised $1,000 for La Salle’s team. Jack Kain, a freshman, was part of the Super Plunger team and raised more than $6,500 for Special Olympics. As a Super Plunger, Kain ran in and out of the Columbia River every hour for 24 hours. He was supported by his parents, Patty and Tommy, brother Ryan, and sister Maren.

MILWAUKIE — La Salle Prep senior Ashley Loomis Malin based her debut novel, Shattered Peace, on an imaginary world she created with two childhood friends.

Malin began writing when she was 11 when encouraged by a director to keep a diary about her character for a musical production. She enjoyed the process and soon began writing other stories. Just for fun, Malin and two friends developed an elaborate make-believe story and each girl acted out and created a fantasy character. She didn’t want to forget their fun imaginative play so she started writing down details about the world they had created. This was the beginning of Shattered Peace, a young adult fantasy novel that took Malin three years to write.

While attending a book signing, Malin and her mom met with an editor who had never worked with a 15-year-old girl. After completing the editing process, Malin self-published her book on Lulu.com. Malin was thrilled to finally see her story in print after three long years, but she found marketing and selling her book quite challenging. Her grandmother sent her a news clipping about a young author who had published a novel through Tate Publishing, a Christian, family-based publishing company in Oklahoma. Malin submitted her manuscript to the publishing company and they agreed to publish her book. You can now order Shattered Peace online through Tate Publishing or find it on Amazon, Barnes & Noble online and at Powell’s bookstore.

Shattered Peace is the first of a four-part series. Malin continues to write and is considering publishing the rest of the series or some of her poetry. She is not sure if she will major in creative writing in college but writing will definitely be part of her future.

“Writing is more of a lifestyle for me," Malin said. "It’s more about expressing myself than writing to be published.” She recently spoke to students at Christ the King School and encouraged them to write as a way to express themselves.

Graduation ceremonies for Malin and other seniors are set for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at New Hope Community Church. Valedictorians are Max Ducey and Charlie Ducey. Salutatorians will be Johannah Brady, Elise Christoferson and Noel DeLeone.

The writer is librarian at La Salle Prep.
