Jesuit High's class of 2012
Nick BiggiIn 1980, Sandy Satterberg stepped into room 12 to teach her first math class at Jesuit. Thirty-two years later, Satterberg has left a legacy as a principal, teacher and confidante.

Besides guiding Jesuit to many successes in athletics and academics, Satterberg is the first female principal at an American Jesuit high school. However, she remains staunch that her greatest accomplishment was more than an award or label.
“I think my greatest accomplishments are maintaining our commitment to the Ignatian identity of our mission and getting good people in positions where they can do what they love to do,” said Satterberg. “When you always refer to the mission in decision making and have good people who are passionate and committed to their vocation, the school runs smoothly, students excel, and community is formed.”
Although the decision was difficult, Satterberg announced that she would step down as principal of Jesuit High School last fall.
“I truly love being principal and believe there are always things we can do to make Jesuit a better place,” she said.
Satterberg will still be in the classroom two periods a day doing what she loves: being with Jesuit students.
After a nationwide search and many interviews with administration, faculty and even student government, Paul Hogan, Jesuit’s academic vice principal, was named principal effective July 1.
Hogan has held the position of Academic Vice Principal for 15 years. Being part of the Jesuit community for such long a time brings “continuity” and “stability” as Hogan describes it. Over the years, he has had a hand in many of the biggest projects and will see those through next year.
“You will see some changes that just happen to be coming because of timing, and then there are a few things I might do a little differently,” said Hogan.
Working under Satterberg for 15 years, Hogan was granted the opportunity to learn more about a job from someone students and staff consider a legend.
“I think Sandy Satterberg has been a prophetic voice and a real pioneer and groundbreaker,” said Hogan. “It’s not because she’s a woman principal of a Jesuit school, it’s because of her vision for the kind of school Jesuit could be.”
A baccalaureate Mass for the class of 2012 is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2 in the school’s Knight Center gymnasium. Commencement takes place at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 3, also in the Knight Center.
