Projects warms winters for homeless

TUALATIN — For the fourth consecutive year, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 13851 in Tualatin, conducted its “Mission for the Homeless” program to provide sleeping bags, socks and coats to people experiencing homelessness. This year’s drive amassed 406 new sleeping bags, 1,338 new pairs of socks, 165 long coats, 60 jackets and 60 other miscellaneous clothing items.

The project coordinators were Dick and Ann Akins of Resurrection Church.
Funding was provided by groups like the West Linn Lions Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society chapter of Resurrection Catholic Parish, Woodmen of the World Rose City Camp 77, Woodmen of the World Society Lodge 1946 and associates and business partners.

Sleeping bags, socks and coats allow people on the streets to stay warm while they sleep outside during the winter. The response to this call is greatly appreciated, organizers said.
A federal report in 2009 indicated that Oregon has the highest proportion of homeless people in the nation. In Washington County, where Resurrection is located, 1,350 people were identified as homeless or in a transitional shelter in 2011, an increase from 180 reported in 2002, according to the county's Department of Housing Services.
