Sister Mary Peter Duyck's fifth and sixth grade students from St. Francis of Assisi School in Roy have had the children of Kenya and Tanzania in mind as they do various fund raisers. The fifth and sixth graders have earned money by selling Santa-grams, Valen-grams, and tomato plants which they started in the classroom. The goal of the service project is to benefit children whose lives have been made difficult because of AIDS. Many children in Africa have lost one or both parents, or are living with AIDS themselves.

The religious community, The Apostles of Jesus, provides a conduit from Oregon to Africa to benefit African children since members of the community are chaplains at Providence-St. Vincent Hospital as well as for the Sisters of St. Mary in Beaverton. Several thousand children in Africa are cared for by the Apostles of Jesus, whose ministries provide food, shelter, and education as well as give medical care to the children. This is the second year that Sister Mary Peter's class has take on what they call AIDS Relief for Children.
