Students help clean neighborhood

About 230 students from the University of Portland’s Pamplin School of Business took part in the St. Johns neighborhood's “Clean Sweep” event March 24. The students helped neighbors with tree planting, trash pickup, cleaning the St. Johns Plaza, graffiti abatement, ivy pulling, painting, planting flowers, and cleaning telephone poles. The work primarily took place along North Lombard Street.

“The goal is to see a physical change in the St. Johns community and create a brand new, clean main street,” said Mike Malone, executive director of Rebuilding Together Portland, which helped organize the effort.

The service project is part of the business school's effort to produce innovative and ethical leaders. Previous service projects include five separate major painting projects at Ockley Green School and Holy Cross School.
