A photo of old bicycles taken with her iPhone on a family trip to Austria has earned St. Mary’s Academy sophomore Lillie Meyer a 2012 National Scholastic Art Award. She has been honored with a silver medal for “Tangle,” a black-and-white digital photograph.

“Tangle” will be among about 300 pieces of artwork by national award winners recognized during a celebration at Carnegie Hall on June 1 and displayed in an exhibition in New York City that month.

Forty pieces of artwork across a wide range of media created by 14 St. Mary’s Academy students, including Meyer, were honored in the 2012 Portland Metro Scholastic Art Awards program. The competition has a writing arm, as well. This year four St. Mary’s Academy students won five regional Scholastic Writing Awards in the poetry and memoir categories.

“I’m really excited. It’s such an honor,” said Meyer, a 16-year-old Vancouver resident. Meyer would like to pursue a career as a creative director to combine her interests in art and business.

Winning this prestigious award is a good launching pad for Meyer, said St. Mary’s Academy art teacher and alumna Kathy Mitchell.

“I believe that the recognition for young artists that the Scholastic Art Awards program gives boosts their confidence and can shape their future," Mitchell said. "Successful artists who have been recognized in the past point to the awards as a pivotal event in their identity as an artist."
