During St. Mary’s Academy’s 2012 Doernbecher Week, students collected change, sold donated treats and paid to watch “Doernbecher Idol” performances to raise money for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Camfed International, Macdonald Center and MamaBaby Haiti.

Doernbecher Week ran Feb. 13-17 at the all-girls high school in Portland, and fundraising activities grossed nearly $5,200. The money will be divided equally among the four charities.

Students sold Doernbecher Week T-shirts in class colors and participated in lunchtime activities such as trivia competitions, student-teacher basketball games and a talent show dubbed “Doernbecher Idol.”

Students participated in record numbers this year. Not only were there more than 300 attendees at each day’s lunch activities, but the 70 girls on an organizing committee spent months planning each piece to the last detail.

"Doernbecher Week 2012 is a great example of girls working together to do wonderful things for the less fortunate,” said Sarah Rice, student activities director at St. Mary’s.
