Pilot rowers christen two boats
The Portland Pilots women’s rowing team began the 2012 spring season with a series of races against Lewis & Clark and a boat christening on the east bank of the Willamette River.
“The team is excited to get the racing season started,” said UP head coach Bill Zack.
Races featured four 1,000-meter “mini” races. The starting line was just south of the Ross Island Bridge, and the course ran south down the Holgate Channel, finishing near the Ross Island Lagoon.
The meet was followed by a boat christening. UP’s eight-person shell was named "Fr. Bill" in honor of Father William Beauchamp, university president. The four-person shell is called "Al and Sue Corrado" in honor of the longtime supporters of UP.
