SALEM — Blanchet Catholic School convened for its annual Founders Day celebration in February.
The evening included a National Honor Society induction ceremony honoring 35 students. There was also recognition of Blanchet faculty, staff and board members. Faculty and staff members Ted Dowell, Micki Halsey-Randall, Chris Lieder, Nancy Parks and Deb Pavelek were honored for five years of service, and Mary Angove, Charles Lee and Barb Schreiber were honored for 15 years. Robert Saalfeld and John Salstrom were recognized for five years of service on the school's board of directors.
The 2012 Community Partner of the Year Award went to Sodexo, the school’s hot lunch provider. Blanchet officials say Sodexo administrators have helped with plans for Blanchet's new commercial kitchen and have contributed services and supplies. The food company also sponsors school events like annual golf tournament.
Kimberley Cannady was honored as Blanchet’s 2012 Volunteer of the Year. Cannady is a long-term volunteer who assists in the library and makes costumes for the drama department. She has coordinated costumes for the Blanchet drama department for more than six years, including memorable costumes for the “Beauty and the Beast” musical, which took five months of daily sewing. Cannady has volunteered six hours a week in the library for more than three years.
The Distinguished Educator of the Year Award was given to Dave Mucken, a physical education teacher, track coach and Earth Club advisor. Mucken spearheaded the upgrade of the school’s weight training facilities and leads the strength training club through year-long training and competitions. "Mucken is revered by all and is a wonderful mentor and inspirational leader to his students and athletes," officials said.
The 2012 President’s Award was given to the Legacy Alumni Committee, which reconnect alumni of Sacred Heart Academy and Serra Catholic High School, both now closed. The committee has organized large reunions and socials and aims to engender good will for Blanchet.
The annual raffle drawing concluded the evening. Tony Guevara, the principal, announced that the school met its raffle fundraising goal with students selling $45,000 worth of tickets.
