Kate Sinnott, a writer for the Central Catholic High newspaper, won the confidence of her peers, who chose her as the Southeast Portland school's Rose Festival ambassador.

Sinnott, an 18-year-old senior, was born in Portland and hopes to pursue a career in fashion design.

In addition to newspapering, she has played tennis and CYO basketball and is a peer mediator, handling campus conflicts.

Hobbies include sewing, drapery, pattern making and fashion illustration. She's also a trusted babysitter.

Sinnott says she most admires her father Bill, a Portland Police commander who has been diagnosed with cancer. She once was walking downtown with him when a homeless person shuffled up. The rumpled man told her how many times her father had been helpful and how lucky she is to have such a father.

"Moments with my dad have become even more precious after the cancer was discovered," she says. "Just as he did for the homeless man, my dad has reached my heart. He showed me what is important without even saying it out loud."

At Central Catholic, Sinnott has "discovered the value of learning, community, friendships and hard work which include leadership, optimism, and integrity."

This won't be the first Rose Festival Parade in which Sinnott has been able to ride by the crowd, waving elbow-elbow, wrist-wrist. When her father was commander of the Traffic Division, he drove the lead car in every parade and she was able to sit in the back seat with a few friends she'd invited.

Kate has two cousins who were Rose Festival Princesses in 2002 and 2004.
