Holy Cross Father William Beauchamp, University of Portland president, will give his annual State of the University presentation during a lunch set to begin at noon Tuesday, March 20 at the Multnomah Athletic Club. The talk will include an update on a $175 million development campaign. Other topics will include achievements in athletics and academics.
Also on the agenda will be the presentation of annual alumni awards to three University of Portland graduates and a senior student.
Bill Winter, a 1964 graduate, will receive the distinguished graduate award. He has been a leader in Oregon health care for 40 years. The award for service goes to Matt Powell of the class of 1984. Powell helped found De La Salle North Catholic High School in 2000 and serves as the school’s president. Honors for a recent graduate go to Chris Burley of the class of 2002, a Portland Police officer shot in the line of duty in 2010. After his recovery, Burley began working on a pilot program that would allow a mobile crisis unit to identify people who suffer from mental illness and who come into frequent contact with police.
Student leadership recognition goes to Kailey Sparks, a senior nursing and Spanish double major. She has helped students learn from outreach and has led retreats. Sparks also volunteers with St. Andre Bessette Parish downtown. She plans to partner with an organization to provide nursing care in a developing country.
