The Search For Peace Art Exhibit, held at St. Pius Parish in February, assembled voices and groups advocating for peace and nonviolence.

On display for the seventh year were the works of artists, poets and poster makers.
The more than 100 artists and scores of visitors were from various religious traditions, cultures and geographic areas. Some entries were received from New York, Virginia and California. Most were from the Portland area.

More than 20 artworks were from students in Adelante Mujeres' ESPERE program, which focuses on conflict resolution. Students and a teacher from the Forest Grove program spoke after the Sunday Spanish Mass about their programs, some of which have received Catholic Campaign for Human Development grants. The art class of Christian Brother Martin Vu from De La Salle North Catholic High School entered many posters. His student, Wario Guyota, won the grand prize for 14 to 18 year olds with a dramatic painting, “Into the Light.”

The weekend included a talk on Catholic Relief Services' peace-building in Africa, the Philippines and Central America. Another presenter offered 27 trends toward peace.
Elina Gouw's colored pencil drawing, “Shading Violence, shining peace,” received much recognition. The contest's jurors chose the 11-year-old's drawing as the grand prize winner in the 10-13 year old category.

Attendees were encouraged to vote for an artwork that most inspired them. Elina's work was also chosen as the People's Choice, for which she will receive the Peacemaker Medal engraved with her name. Elina is a member of St. Juan Diego Parish and is a catechumen this year.

“It was impossible to see all of the visual messages and not be moved,” said exhibit visitor Jim Shaffer.

Artist Britt McNamee used the exhibit to recognize Joann Vennes's 40 years of decorating her church with flowers. Britt exhibited this written tribute to Joann along with a watercolor “A Bouquet For Joann:" “The colors and fragrances of the flowers are a source of inner peace in these troubled times and serve as a welcome antidote to strife in the world.”

Posters, poems, prize winners and art from the exhibit can be seen at the website www.SearchForPeaceArt.org in April.
