The University of Portland bell tower has won top honors for design from the Masonry & Ceramic Tile Institute of Oregon. The biennial awards honor projects in Oregon featuring prominent use of masonry. The bell tower was designed by Dan Danielson of Soderstrom Architects and built by Fortis Construction.
Judges noted craftsmanship and integration of elements. The university's Franz Hall, also designed by Soderstrom, received the same award in 1997.
The tower, dedicated in 2009, is the tallest point on campus at 106 feet and is visible from downtown Portland. Fourteen bells range in size from 77 to 1,400 pounds.
