Katie O’Reilly, a University of Portland biology professor, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to study a species of penguin and teach conservation ecology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand next spring. O’Reilly will study hormones and their effects on small blue penguins. It's the 12th Fulbright grant won by a University of Portland professor over the past 15 years, and the first ever won by a woman.
O’Reilly focuses on behavioral ecology and endocrinology of seabirds. The little blue is the smallest of penguins. O’Reilly and a University of Auckland will seek out patterns of movement, metabolism and hormone secretion before, during and after feather molt.
