St. Luke School: faith, academics, service
St. Luke School photo
Students make a presentation at morning gathering, St. Luke School, Woodburn.
The bell rings at 8 a.m.; students, teachers, and several parents gather in the school library to begin their day with prayer. Sometimes prayer involves skits, sometimes it involves singing, sometimes it involves traditional prayers, and sometimes it’s the Gospel reading for the day. This is a snapshot of how the community of St. Luke School expresses faith on a daily basis. Daily announcements and student recognition awards are given following prayer, which is led by a different class each week.
Students will hold a science fair as part of a school open house on Feb. 2. Ideas have been discussed, questions have been formulated, hypotheses made, research is in the final stages, and later this month the final touches will be put on each individual project.
Students are active in several types of volunteer activities. Monthly, Mrs. Storm's kindergarten class visits Country Meadows retirement facility in Woodburn where they entertain residents with singing, dancing, and craft projects. Mrs. Hager's fifth graders participate in a biweekly school recycling pick up. Wednesday afternoons find Mrs. Cromwell's sixth graders sorting and putting together food boxes in the St. Vincent de Paul food bank. And there are monthly trips to the Downtown Chapel’s Brother Andre Café to serve soup and offer hospitality to those who live on the street in Portland by Mrs. William’s and Mr. Harkness’s seventh and eighth graders.
