The students of Archbishop Howard School at St. Rose are learning through experience.

Each week the students, prekindergarten through eighth grade, attend a weekly Mass at which they participate as readers, altar servers and musicians.

With the help of alumnae and parent, Jean Czuba, and past parent, Bridget Rowley, AHS began a liturgical music program five years ago. The program focuses on the importance of participating during Mass, especially through song. The students learn both traditional and contemporary works of music during liturgical music class once a week.

Learning through song helps younger students who can’t quite read, allowing them to feel like they are a vital part of the weekly school Mass, say staff. The students are taught songs and prayers, incorporating their current religion curriculum, and reflecting on Mass readings for the liturgical season during their class. Each week, a different class sponsors the Mass providing, readers, gift bearers and choir participants. Parents and St. Rose parishioners are welcomed to attend the school Masses each week. The choir has become a popular way for the students to participate and in turn have a better understanding for faith, prayer, and service towards their fellow students. Students will be showcasing their skills during Catholic Schools Week at a number of student sponsored Masses.
