HILLSBORO — Since 1914, teachers and staff at St. Matthew Catholic School here have actively woven a dynamic tapestry of academics and Catholic faith formation for their students.

Along with the traditional subjects such as language arts, science, and math, students participate in daily school-wide prayer, visits to the on-campus Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, and weekly school-wide Mass, where classes take turns assisting with the liturgy.

“St. Matthew is a strong, faith-filled community where students come to be academically challenged while experiencing their faith as it is integrated throughout our curriculum each day,” says Jeannie Ray-Timoney, principal.

This active integration of academic and faith-based subject matter is evidenced in the school’s learning expectations, which include being: Christian role models, effective communicators, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners.

One of the unique ways St. Matthew students experience their faith is through the significant on-campus presence of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. Father Peter Arteaga, pastor, and Father Pablo Sánchez and Father José Ortego, both associate pastors, interact with the students on a regular basis.

“I just appreciate our priests’ commitment to getting to know and engage our students in their faith as part of everyday life,” says Jennifer Dern, second grade teacher. “We don’t just see them on the weekends for Mass or on Thursdays for school Mass. The kids are always so excited to see our priests on the playground or stopping to chat in the hallway.”

This sense of excitement to share in a dynamic community of faith is mutual, according to Arteaga. “As missionaries, it is quite fulfilling for us to interact with the youngest members of our faith community – to help guide them to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through his Church,” he said.
