1/18/2012 4:46:00 PM Catholic schools week busy in Albany
ALBANY — The theme for the 2012 Catholic Schools Week celebration focuses on three priorities that make Catholic schools stand out from other educational institutions. Children are taught faith – not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to high standards, help each child reach his or her potential. Service, the giving of one’s time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship.
Students at St. Mary's will begin their observance of Catholic Schools Week by celebrating Mass at Regis High School with all the Catholic school students in the region on Friday, Jan. 27. The school then will focus on a different priority each day of the following week beginning with service on Monday. All-school morning prayer that day will include small group meetings with a school parent who will talk about what life is like for senior citizens. The students will visit various senior living communities presenting small care packages for residents.
The Catholic school priority of academics will be the focus of the Tuesday activities. They begin with morning prayer and then the principal, pastor and a parent contestant will play the game show “Are You Smarter Than a Catholic School Student?” The same day, middle school students will become classroom teachers for the afternoon.
Wednesday of Catholic Schools Week at St. Mary School is dedicated to fun. Students will be invited to “dress down.” Hot lunch that day will feature a special dessert and a movie will be shown in the afternoon for all students.
Thursday, staff and students will focus on faith as they begin the school day with Mass. Students will participate in teacher-led prayer stations. The afternoon will feature a labyrinth with a preparation station, guided meditation, craft, music and liturgical dance.
