Portland - Central Catholic High School

The Central Catholic community started off the new school year with a boost of energy from the addition of new coaches, new faculty, and the biggest freshman class in decades, as well as the news of their solid performance in last year’s standardized testing.

After receiving a record number of applications, and enrolling the highest number of freshmen in recent memory, Central Catholic added a number of new faces over the summer. Kyle Bunch is teaching religion and science; Taren Taylor, English; Kimberly Zoucha, math; Theresa Ragsdale, foreign language; Andrew Sharp, technology and science; and finally, Dan Munson, Geoffrey Stuckart, and Jake Miller, social studies. Dan Munson was hired as the varsity boys’ basketball head coach after Mike Petrino left Central Catholic to pursue a coaching career at the University of Wyoming. Dan Floyd (’97) was hired as the new varsity baseball head coach to replace Kevin Cave, who left his position to pursue a degree in law. Last but not least, Kathleen Gianotti was hired as the new assistant service coordinator.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming our large freshman class, our nine bright, creative, and energetic staff, and continuing to provide Catholic college preparatory education to as many families as we can,” Principal John Garrow said.

Now more than ever, Central Catholic is focusing on making sure that each child that enters the school reaches their academic potential. Last year, 11 students were recognized as AP scholars, four as AP scholar with honor, and 15 as AP scholars with distinction. Most impressively, Willy Leineweber (’11) was recognized as a National AP Scholar after passing eight AP exams with an average score of 4.75.

In order to level the academic playing field, Central Catholic is expanding its Student Support Services program. The program, which is now in its second year, added classes in math for freshmen and language arts for freshmen and sophomores. The support classes, combined with after school study hall and in-class tutors, are meant to eliminate gaps in academic performance and prepare each child for college.
